  • Hemmingway, Chiam Potok and most Russian authors:
    These are my "go-to" books.

This is the one I last finished.... If you're interested in the Middle East/Islamic cultures, women's rights and/or the power of literature, you'd probably be a fan. I'm into all three of those, so, yeah, I liked it.

My sister is a big fan, so I've decided to check it out. A little more fantastical than my usual fare, but...pretty interesting. I am supplementing it with another book about a childhood spent in Africa so as not to feel too shallow. Not that fun books are "shallow." I just gravitate toward realistic (and, for some reason, usually dark) stuff. So this is different for me. But different might be ok. We'll see....

Sign of the Times

Well, not too much new to report.  Except that my sister made me a new banner.  I like it.  Some of my all-time classic sign pictures from China.

I love the last line of that pizza one - it's like, there's just no word to describe it, so they say "can bring you what."  That's like a note that a student wrote to a fellow teacher during my first year in China.  She was trying to say something was great (I guess), and she just said, "It's really!"

Sometimes when I'm writing (which seem to be times far and few between now days, but still...), that's pretty much how I'd like to say something - maybe there's just not an adjective that really sums up an emotion accurately enough.  Or maybe you just want to leave it up to the interpretation of the reader.  Anyway...that's my thought on words for the day.

So, yeah, I have no pictures for this entry - sorry.  I might get some tomorrow, though, since I'm running my half marathon in the morning.  The date actually kind of sneaked (snook?) up on me, so I'm not really prepared.  But should be fun, anyway.  As the lady in that one Seinfeld episode would say, "You're all winners!"  : )

And I guess that's about it for now.  I played some flag football this morning then ran errands all day: laundry, grocery shopping...the usual.  Tonight, I'm getting together with some co-workers for a "puffy-paint decorating sweatshirts" party.  Hey, it's Christmas time - I don't ask; I just go along with the festivities.  It's really!  : )

Anyway, hope everyone's December is starting well.  Let the merriment begin!

How about snuck up on you. Snuck, sneaked, snook, or maybe peek aboo'd. Have a great run and be sure to wear your sneakers:)
Dad

Hope your run was all that and a bag of beans (or perhaps, a bag of rice).

You're really. Meow.

Backstory

  • *WHERE*
    Pasadena, California
  • *WHO*
Well, I'm Andrea, and this is my blog. Other people's names will pop up now and then, too, but I'll try to explain those as I go.
  • *WHAT*
I'm still working for the same organization with which I went to China...except now I'm in southern California, assisting OTHER teachers in China (and elsewhere in Asia).
  • *WHEN*
After graduating college in the summer of 2001, I moved to China and taught English for a year. Then I returned to the States - first to the Northwest, then to Florida - until returning to China (Tibet) in the spring of 2005. After teaching there for three months, I returned to Florida (where I lived a total of almost two years)...then to the Northwest...then back to China in February 2006. I stayed there until July 2007. Then, after a couple of months with my family in the Northwest, I moved to California (September 2007)...which brings us to now. Simple, yeah?
