  • Hemmingway, Chiam Potok and most Russian authors:
    These are my "go-to" books.

This is the one I last finished.... If you're interested in the Middle East/Islamic cultures, women's rights and/or the power of literature, you'd probably be a fan. I'm into all three of those, so, yeah, I liked it.

My sister is a big fan, so I've decided to check it out. A little more fantastical than my usual fare, but...pretty interesting. I am supplementing it with another book about a childhood spent in Africa so as not to feel too shallow. Not that fun books are "shallow." I just gravitate toward realistic (and, for some reason, usually dark) stuff. So this is different for me. But different might be ok. We'll see....

Something Fishy

Well, I thought I should start out by showing the pictures of the rest of my apartment (since, as my sister pointed out, it appears from my earlier two picts as though I have no place for clothes...or a bathroom).  So, here are those:

Img_1809 Ok, so, now you've seen it all: my home.  I've also found this pretty sweet canyon near by with running trails, so maybe I'll have to include those picts sometime to give you more of a feel for the area.

But, now, as I'm getting a little more settled in, my life is beginning to consist of more than just my office and apartment, so I actually have some pictures of "the outside" for ya.  Today I went to the acquarium in Long Beach with a friend from work and got to pet the sting rays and all that.  A good time was had by all (especially since in the month of September if you work for a non-profit, you get in free...and, as we all know, a free good time is the best kind of all).  : )

So, here are some pictures of that: sting rays, cool bright fish and this crazy seahorse thing.  Pretty amazing creatures down there in the deep blue sea, ay? If it weren't for the sharks, I may even want to visit sometime.  (But that's a big "if" since I really do have an immense irrational fear of them - "Jaws" pretty much scarred me for life.)  Anyway, without further ado, here's your mini-tour of the Long Beach Acquarium.  Enjoy!

Backstory

  • *WHERE*
    Pasadena, California
  • *WHO*
Well, I'm Andrea, and this is my blog. Other people's names will pop up now and then, too, but I'll try to explain those as I go.
  • *WHAT*
I'm still working for the same organization with which I went to China...except now I'm in southern California, assisting OTHER teachers in China (and elsewhere in Asia).
  • *WHEN*
After graduating college in the summer of 2001, I moved to China and taught English for a year. Then I returned to the States - first to the Northwest, then to Florida - until returning to China (Tibet) in the spring of 2005. After teaching there for three months, I returned to Florida (where I lived a total of almost two years)...then to the Northwest...then back to China in February 2006. I stayed there until July 2007. Then, after a couple of months with my family in the Northwest, I moved to California (September 2007)...which brings us to now. Simple, yeah?
