This is the one I last finished.... If you're interested in the Middle East/Islamic cultures, women's rights and/or the power of literature, you'd probably be a fan. I'm into all three of those, so, yeah, I liked it.

My sister is a big fan, so I've decided to check it out. A little more fantastical than my usual fare, but...pretty interesting. I am supplementing it with another book about a childhood spent in Africa so as not to feel too shallow. Not that fun books are "shallow." I just gravitate toward realistic (and, for some reason, usually dark) stuff. So this is different for me. But different might be ok. We'll see....

The Future Looks Bright

The last five days can be summed up thus: Colorado = nice.  My work sent me, along with friends and co-workers B & KM, out to Ft. Collins in order to scope out the place we'll be renting (which, quite excellently, is right in front of a frisbee golf course).  While there, we also checked out: the future office (which is mcuh bigger than our current space...and has a coffee bar), future movie theatres (there are two...plus a drive in), future coffee shops (five Starbucks and a plethera of other local places), future eateries (many, many sandwich eateries...and a few nice pubs), future biking/running paths (huzzah!), etc.  Basically...we just saw our future lives.  And you know what?  It looks pretty good.

More pictures to come.  Here's just a glimpse:IMG_3134

Home sweet future home.

And, yes, I still have some picts of San Diego from the previous weekend, but...I'm actually leaving again, so...again, they'll have to wait.  Sorry.  When I get back, though, I should have some San Fran picts for you, as well, so...maybe it'll be worth the wait.  Maybe....  Until then, here's one of the bay down there:

IMG_3118

And until I have a chance to catch up on some stuff...have a great Fourth.  I'll be spending mine rooting for the Dodger Blue at Giants Stadium.  Crazy?  Perhaps.  But, hey, what can be more patriotic than having peanuts thrown at you while cheering on the away team at a baseball game in San Francisco? Now that's America to me.  : )  Happy celebrating!

Rocky Mountain, Hi

Last Sunday was spent in San Diego.  Pictures and stories of Spanish-speaking churches and coffee aplenty.  But...looks like that post will have to wait for just a bit longer 'cause I'm actually in Colorado this weekend (and for half of next week).  That's right: B & I flew out to Denver last night and are here to look at a place to rent when we relocate to Ft. Collins in October.  KM (another friend/co-worker) is joining us tomorrow to check out Ft. Collins, so for today...we're just soaking in our future state of residence.

And, yeah, so far, so good.  We're currently staying near Boulder, so today's plan is to hang out around there.  Got some good sleep last night (after no problems with the flight, getting the rental car and driving to Louisville-near-Boulder) and got a good run in this morning....  Thus far, Colorado's treating us well.  : )

More to come later, I'm sure....  Have a breath-of-fresh-air weekend, all!

Family Matters

Jake england beach Ok, not really a post today...just wanted to share a couple pictures from my family.

My little brother is currently in England and sent this one home.  Seems like he's having a smashing time.  Or something like that.  ...I'm happy that he gets a chance to see some new things.  Like rocky, cloudy beaches.  'Cause, yeah, we don't have those in Oregon....  : )

4 nieces And these are my four nieces.  With my sis & bro-in-law over on the East coast at the moment, their two are enjoying some slumber parties with their two cousins.  Quite the little gang of misfits....

Anyway, that's it.  It's the end of the week, and I'm tired.  No big plans for the next few days.  San Diego on Sunday....

June 18, 2008

It's a Living : )

Why have I not posted in 10 days?  Probably no good reason.  Just keeping busy at work, I guess....

Sunday was Father's Day, and tomorrow is my dad's b-day, so...here's a shout out to him.  He's a good dad, and I like him.  Love ya, Dad!  : )

What else...?  I leave for my Colorado "place hunting" trip at the end of next week.  Will be seeing, and hopefully signing for, a house...to rent, of course.  The next weekend after that will be 4th of July in San Fran.  That's the plan, anyway.  I've never been, but I used to watch "Full House," so I feel that I have a good idea of what it'll be like.  I'm envisioning wacky family antics and Giants baseball....  Hope it can live up!

And I guess that's it.  Sorry, no pictures.  And no "theme" (though most of you, right about now, are probably wondering, "Is there ever a theme?  Is that what you call this random mess?").  Despite the good brain food of fish tacos (gotta love 99-cent fish taco Wednesdays) and a Starbucks mint mocha frap (my boss truly knows how to motivate me) that I had during work today, I am not feeling very creative.  ...Don't get me wrong, though - I like my job.  And I like my friends at work.  And this is what my life is consisting of these days.  Now you're all caught up.  : )

And in other family news: my older bro and fam just got back from Hawaii.  Nice.  And my little bro and sister and bro-in-law are out traveling the world.  The former to Europe (hope he doesn't come back wearing too tight of jeans and saying things like "top notch, kipper!"), and the latter two on an Eastcoast trip (visited Ellis Island yesterday; Philly today).  ...And I'm in SoCal, with no complaints.  98 degrees again today.  But seemed much cooler with a nice frap in the hand....  : )

Outtie for now.

Running...Baseball...Fishing...Siblings...Cinema - My Life of Late

Yesterday, some friends from work and I ran in a 5/10K in support of Salvation Army kids' camps.  Worth getting up at 5:15am for on a Saturday?  Actually, yes.  'Twas really a good time.  And got free stuff, so can't complain....

Then JD & B & I did this: June7 dodgers v cubs

Yes, we have another Dodgers' game under our belts now (if you can't tell, that's the stadium we're walking towards).  Although I love (well, strongly like, anyway) my M's (aka the Seattle Mariners), I figure that A) since I live here at the moment, perhaps I should support a local team, and B) I'm not really betraying the M's because the Dodgers and Mariners aren't even in the same league (one is National; the other American).  If I were to become an Angels fan, it might be a different story, but...the Dodgers?  I think the M's can forgive me that....  So...go 'Gers!  (By the way, they beat the Cubbies 7-3 yesterday...which was a tad surprising [pleasantly] considering that one might define the Cubs as "good" and mabye the Dodgers as, well, not so much.  Played well yesterday, though....)

So, other than running and enjoying a sunny day at the ballpark, I've been keeping busy with a little of this and a little of that.  Had a good visit with KP, my friend working in Vietnam, on Friday as she was on her way back up to the BP (our hometown of Brush Prairie, that is); still busy but good at work; still miss China and my peeps there (but dinner last night at a pretty authentic Chinese restaurant with friends who have also lived over there helped a little...or made me miss it more?  I don't know which); and still working on my Guitar Hero skills.  All in all, things are good.

But, as promised, I owe a few belated posts: sister's visit, lil bro's visit and fishing with coworkers in Mexico.  So, without further ado, here are those:

IMG_3079 First off...the fishing trip.  A week ago, Thursday & Friday, three car-loads fullIMG_3086 of my coworkers (and myself) drove the three and a half-ish hours to visit our friendly neighbors down south in Ensanda.  We spent Thursday night there and then fished till we could fish no more on Friday.

I ended up catching three "keepable" fish (two cod & one red snapper) and one other weird-looking one (rock cod?) that the boat crew kept (too small for me, I guess).  As it was deep-sea fishing, it was quite different from the type of angling I had done before (which usually consisted of me either sitting on a bank or in a small motor boat and waiting for hours on end for my bobber to move - I actually like this kind of fishing but think that any real "fishing" going on during these times is more just an incidental occurrence in an otherwise relaxing morning of reading or hanging out).  Deep-sea fishing, as it turns out, is a bit more fast paced (or, at least, it was on this trip).  Put the minow on the hook, drop it down into the water a ways, feel a pull, and A) bring it up and find that your bait was stolen (likely) or B) bring it up and have to put a lot of muscle into it and find that you're snagged on a sea lion who is eating your catch or C) bring it up and have to put a medium amount of muscle into it and find that...ta da!  You have a fish!  (And it's not justIMG_3085 the minow that you started with as bait!)

Overall, it was an enjoyable experience.  On the downside, a couple of us (coworker AB & I) ended up doing a little chumming of the waters, so to speak.  I don't usually get motion sickness, but, for whatever reason, when this boat was a rockin', my breakfast came a knockin'.  Ah well - a small price to pay for...Red Snapper.  Very tastey.  (And if you don't get that, you missed a classic in UHF.  This clip should be all the explanation you need...and then some.)

So...that was that.  A few other pictures to give you a feel for it: 1) AB reenacting our chumming technique; 2) T pleasantly surprised by her captured creature; 3) JD with his catch of the day...his bait minow; and 4) back on land and enjoying fish tacos....

And now...I'm tired.  And still bro & sis' visits to tell?  Hmm...ok, I'll summarize bro J's, briefly, and then see how much energy I have left....

So, my little bro (Jake) came down to see me a couple of weeks ago, and mostly, we just took it easy andIMG_3059 enjoyed all the things that Pasadena (and the neighboring town of Sierra Madre) has to offer: eating at the falafel place next door, doing a little hiking/running in the foothills, chilling with peeps (one of J's old college classmates lives in the area, so we had a Memorial Day bbq with his fam...then another bbq with my friend D and her crew who go to school nearby and whom J knows from when he visited me in Florida [because D was living there at the time, too] - it's a very small, convolutedly-connected world sometimes, isn't it?), and participating in a local city 10K (Jake won, so I got a free pair of running shoes [his prize became my prize, naturally]).  It was very cool having him here, and I should give a shout out to him 'cause he just graduated with his Master's in biomechanic-type stuff.  Congrats!  And he's leaving in a few days for a few months of traveling in Europe and doing some volunteer work in India.  Should be pretty sweet.IMG_3061

And thanks to his visit here, he's got a sharp new haircut for his upcoming on-the-go schedule.  The first one (a local barber) didn't really take so well, but, after a visit to a second hair stylist (an actual stylist this time), it got sorted out.  The second lady didn't have much to work with, so I think this was her attempt at a faux hawk.  It's definitely the shortest that J has had it since high school, but certainly better than theIMG_3055 alternative....     IMG_3056

Alright.  I think that should do it for now.  And how about for a recap of my sister's visit, you just go check out her blog at Creature Bug (June 3rd post - plus, you can see the most hilarious yogurt video ever).  She did a much more thorough job of it than I would have, anyway - per usual.  : )

Oh!  Also, I was going to tell about the movie screening that T, B & AG went to on Monday.  So many posts, so little time!  So, again, how about I just link you over to B's page (My Kind of Witty), as she has already said it all.  The only differences in our versions of the story would be A) I did read the book first [still just thought the movie was "good," not "excellent" or "very good"...I might say about the same for the book], and B) I only got to pick the movie poster I liked best and turn in my questionnaire at the end - they only cared about the opinions of 3 out of the 4 of us, so, per usual, the most apathetic one gets the boot (and in typical Northwesterner+middle child fashion, I had no particularly strong feelings I wished to convey, anyway...).  : )

So, yeah, was fun.  And now...I must get away from this computer.  Enjoy the rest of the weekend, all!  Till next time....

June 05, 2008

Update: And so June begins....

Sorry...still no post.  I really was going to do it today, too....  The good news?  I avoided late fees by getting some bills paid and perhaps avoided a few disgruntled friends by getting a few e-mails written.  The bad news?  I was unable to support JD as his beloved Pens fell to the Red Wings in the Stanley Cup finals tonight.  And I didn't even get a post written....  Ack!

Things coming up: tomorrow - rootbeer taste-test at work.  Somehow this relates to Asia.  Trust me.  : )  Also, my friend KP is back from Vietnam, and we might actually get to cross paths briefly (between all her hopping around) for lunch on Friday.  Here's to hoping!  And on Saturday, I've got another 10K going on - this one's actually a trail run.  And I have not been very diligent in my running this week, so it could turn out to be a little painful.  But, still...it's in support of a kids' camp, so...how can you say no to that?

And posts to catch up on still: sister's visit, lil bro's visit, fishing in Mexico, going to a movie screening in Pasadena.  I believe in my heart that this will happen before too long.  Oh...and I still need to finish the Middle East album, I guess....  Oh, and did I mention that my sis-in-law is prego?  Another niece (or nephew?) coming up!  This will be five.  Also, I just heard my good ol' college pal W is expecting.  Excellent!

So much going on in life.  But all good things.  Even work, despite being busy, is good.  I have no complaints.  Happy June, everybody!  I'm going to bed!  : )

Bro is Here

I know I still need to finish posting about my sister's visit last weekend, but I thought I'd just give a quick update about my lil bro's visit this weekend....

So far, we have hung out, gone for a few runs at my canyon, participated in a city 10k (he won, so now I have a free new pair of shoes...excellent), met up with one of his old college buddies to watch the Lakers game last night (they lost, but I was decidedly ambivalent about this) and are going to a bbq of that same buddy's family.  So...there ya go.  Good times.

Haven't gotten many picts, but maybe I'll have a couple later....

S's SoCal Adventures

E-01 pasadena court house Over the weekend, my sis, S, came to visit.  Here, then, is the recap....

Friday:

1) I had never seen so much of my city all in one day, and I must say...Pasadena has pretty much got it going on.  With the temperature being at 100 degrees, it was a perfect day for walking around.  : )  Here's the court house with some head statues.  Naturally.

E-02 pasadena listens to the people

2) Apparently, Pasadena listens to its people.  And, for that matter, also its visitors.

E-03 pasadena library is beautiful  3) Pasadena public library.  It is beautiful.  No joke.

E-04 pasadena cafe santorini

4) Cafe Santorini in Old Town.  Pizza...salad...both good.

5) And no trip is complete without....E-05 pasadena no trip is complete without

...You know what they say: a new Pinkberry fan is born every day.

E-06 pasadena is artsy

6) A tiny little artsy alley.  I would live here.  Right under this canopy.

E-07 Hollywood sign look closely

7) Friday evening: went into LA to take in a little theatre.  And, yes, I felt like a tourist taking this shot.  But, hey, we got it: the Hollywood sign. (See it in the background?  It is actually there....)  Anyway, after we crossed that off the list, we could continue on to the main event....

E-08 Wicked awesome you mean

8)  Wicked!  I don't want to exaggerate, but...a contender for "the greatest play ever"?  Maybe.  I'm just saying....

E-09 Wicked this play was amazing

9)  'Twas, indeed, wicked awesome.  Worth putting on a skirt for, even.  And you know that's saying something....

And that was just the first day!  For Saturday, Sunday & Monday's recap...stay tuned.  : )

I Heart My Mom!

Just wanted to say, "Happy Mother's Day!"  Mostly to my mom, but, you know...hope the rest of you moms out there had a good one, too.  : )Img_2977

In celebration (and because our co-worker sunk his shot at lunch - perhaps I'll explain this bet later...), B &  I babysat L & T yesterday.  We also went to L's 3rd birthday party on Friday night and enjoyed the festivities at the local farmer's market (pictured).  Although it kind of made me miss my nieces, it was a great time, & it made me thankful for the fact that when the Big Guy calls you away from your family, He always provides other people in your life to help fill the voids.  Not that anyone can Img_2967replace your family, of course, but I guess I mean that He just kind of gives you more "family."  Don't know if that makes any sense, but, anyway, it was just something I was thinking about....

But speaking of family, my sister is coming this Thursday night.  We're pretty much going to try to do all things SoCal (well, maybe not all things...but the cool things, anyway), so should be sweet.  I'll let you know how it goes....

Oh, and I also got more pictures uploaded into the "Middle East" album (left sidebar).  Egypt's done, so just Jordan & Israel left.  FYI.

And I guess that's pretty much it.  This week's highlights?  Well, at work, we had an all-day workshop in which we got to figure out our work strengths.  And although I don't know that I would classify any kind of all-day workshop as a "highlight," we did get to listen to (and tell) strength stories, so that was kind of fun.  Perhaps I learned that I love stories....  : )

Oh, and also this week, I saw the new model of Honda CVR.  And though I am a big fan of my '99 CVR and it has treated me well, I have to say that I'm not a huge fan of the new version.  It's like a little bubble.  Not bad, I guess...just not my style.  Probably didn't help, though, that the accompanying bumper sticker read, "I 'heart' my Honda."  ...I pretty much don't know how to respond to that, but I can say that if you ever see me expressing a sentiment like that on my car, I give you full permission to slap me.  : )

...There are actually very few things I would say that I "heart," but my mom, of course, is one of them.  Again, happy Mother's Day.  Have a great week!

May 05, 2008

FYI - Better late than never?

So, I'm starting to upload some of my Middle East trip photos into an album (see the section on the left sidebar that has albums?).  Only six weeks after the fact - not too bad, ay?  Actually, if I were a super hero, I think my power would be slowness....  Ah well, it is what it is.  Anyway, enjoy the photos...if you're still interested.  : )

And hope the week is starting well for you all.  My highlight was a sweet score on the free table today at work....  It pretty much provided my whole lunch: sandwiches, pasta salad, potato salad, pickles and even cookies.  Though the cookies were nothing to write home about (but clearly, worth posting about), the rest was pretty tasty.  And, come on, it was free!  Also, my peppermint/white chocolate latte was the breakfast of champs this morning.  All in all, not a bad Monday.

Oh, and I really have to share this latest "our students say the darnedest things" example from one of our teachers.  She had them write papers about American states and, per usual, learned some pretty interesting things.  Three of my favorites:

Washington: Their state dance is the square dance, which means square in French. (French and English are similar like that).

Alaska: The flower of Alaska is don’t forget me. The people of native no longer live a life in the small ice room and eat the rawness, but they have become the workers and live in the city have a modern life.

Louisiana: The most famous feature of Louisiana is the Cajun culture, so you can’t miss it if you visit there, or you will regret for your whole life. (Apparently the jambalaya really is that amazing).

I tell ya, some days I really miss China.  : )

  • All that is gold does not glitter; not all those that wander are lost.

Backstory

  • *WHERE*
    Pasadena, California
  • *WHO*
Well, I'm Andrea, and this is my blog. Other people's names will pop up now and then, too, but I'll try to explain those as I go.
  • *WHAT*
I'm still working for the same organization with which I went to China...except now I'm in southern California, assisting OTHER teachers in China (and elsewhere in Asia).
  • *WHEN*
After graduating college in the summer of 2001, I moved to China and taught English for a year. Then I returned to the States - first to the Northwest, then to Florida - until returning to China (Tibet) in the spring of 2005. After teaching there for three months, I returned to Florida (where I lived a total of almost two years)...then to the Northwest...then back to China in February 2006. I stayed there until July 2007. Then, after a couple of months with my family in the Northwest, I moved to California (September 2007)...which brings us to now. Simple, yeah?
